The National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK certainly makes for an interesting place to work. The venue is huge and is home to some of the world’s largest exhibitions and trade shows. From events like Crufts, which sees 22,000 dogs and 150,000 visitors, to trade shows like Spring Fair, which annually showcases 300,000 new retail products across all of the NEC’s 20 halls.

Arriving at work, there’s normally a hive of activity with shows either in the process of being built, open to customers or in break-down. Then there are those days when all is quiet and there is a sense of calm, the days when our eyes are opened by an amazing contradiction to the norm.

I wanted to photograph the venue at its most restful, highlighting a side of the building that the millions of visitors a year don’t see and capturing those hidden visual gems which are often lost in the noise of a busy live events hub.
